It can be used to enable a one-sided boardwipe like Flawless Maneuver, and I am in double-digits for the amount of times Ive killed a player with the 4 damage mode
Field of Ruin is already seeing a ton of play in Modern, but thats because Modern is a format where your lands are incredibly important (and there arent a ton of basic lands to search out)
The only problem is that its almost impossible to find, with decks selling out instantly and releases being plagued with other problems
If, on the other hand, some effect such as that from Platinum Angel says that you cant lose the game then even the last ability of the Lich cannot cause you to do so
